PCQ - Sprint Championship Round 1 (8/03/20)

Shannons PCQ Sprint Championship Round 1 @ Lakeside Raceway

Nick went along to one of the Porsche Club's many weekend track day events last weekend. This one happened to be the Shannons PCQ Sprint Championship at Lakeside Raceway. This was the first round of the championship and Nick managed to have a chat to a few of the drivers (as well as take some action shots around the track).

Henry - Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport

First up, we have Henry in his Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Now this definitely isn't Henry's first time on the track, opting to swap his road tyres out for slicks on the day. Henry mentioned that the Cayman is very balanced and forgiving throughout the track and really reaches its true potential with some stickier tyres.

Kevin - Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Car

Now onto Kevin, PCQ's own Motorsport Director! Kevin's weapon of choice was the 997 GT3 Cup Car. Kevin was kind enough to offer a few words about the difficulty of Lakeside, stating that Lakeside has one of the fastest averages of any track in Australia, with very few run offs and a few cruely named corners, such as "Hungry", because they've been known to eat cars!

Kevin's 997 has never spent a day on the road, it came out of Stuttgart as a race car and that's how he believes it should be used. Kevin said it's uncomfortable, noisy, stiff, hot and raw... but that's what makes it quick - it's fantastic.

Graham - Porsche 944 ST

Next up, Graham. Graham's brought along his Porsche 944 ST to run around lakeside. This is Graham's third session around Lakeside, mentioning that it's a more difficult track then any of the circuits he'd driven on back home in New Zealand.

With a few tasteful suspension modifications and some meaty 9" rear wheels, Graham's best was 1:08 on the day.

Natalie - Porsche 718 Cayman

This was Natelie's first drive around Lakeside in her Cayman. This is Natalie's favourite track, stating that the undulating design of the track and all the bends allow her to drive the car harder and not get left behind on the straights.

Fiona - Porsche 996 911 Carrera

This was Fiona's very first track day. She was a bit nervous, but found the whole experience "pretty awesome".

She said "...having to think about the corners, what gear I'm in, what I should be in, and which way to take them..." was constantly on her mind but felt reassured by friendly, fellow Porsche Club members telling her "...to give it a year and everything will be okay".

Fiona ran a 1:22 on her first run, and stated that she'll definitely back for some more sprint days with the club.

Club Members

Although we didn't get a chance to interview everyone, we did manage to take a few photos of the remaining club members racing around the track.

If you're interested in a copy or print of any of the photos taken on the day, please feel free to contact us.
